Public Urban Transport (MHD) in Bratislava uses buses, trolley buses and trams. MHD network is rich. Most of the routes are operated daily from 5 am till midnight. At night transport operates according to night schedules. Before you take a MHD vehicle, you are asked to buy a ticket. It is not possible to purchase a ticket at the driver, it is necessary to buy tickets at the stop in a machine or at a newspaper stall. There are some stops where it is no possible to find a machine or a newspaper stall. It is therefore recommended to purchase more tickets in advance.
Tickets come in various validities: 10 minutes, 30 minutes and 60 minutes. 10 minutes ticket is best to use on one route without changing vehicles. The time needed to get from one stop to another is always shown on the schedule. This time is binding for ticket inspectors even in the case of a traffic jam. People in Bratislava usually prefer to use special prepaid tickets that are valid one month, 3 months or even a year.
You are asked to validate the ticket immediately after entering the vehicle. Validation machine works all the time, except the time when the ticket inspector enters the vehicle. Inspectors walk through whole vehicle and every passenger to show his ticket. If you don’t have a validated and valid ticket you can get a fine up to 1400 Sk (~35€). If you travel with a dog or a bigger luggage you are asked to purchase a separate ticket.
Best choice for tourists who plan to use the public transport more often is to purchase a prepaid 24 hours or 48 hours ticket. With this ticket you can travel as much as you like with any type of public transport.
