Bratislava is the official name of the capital since 1919. In the past various names were used for this town, German Preßburg, Latin Possonium, Hungarian Pozsony. Bratislava is one of the youngest capitals in Europe. City became first time capital of the Slovak State in years 1939 - 1945. In 1993 became capital of the independent Slovak Republic.
